The Story
The novel opens with a tragedy that will forever change the lives of the two main characters, Chance and Troy Chance. Chance, the older brother, is a young man full of promise and potential. He has a promising career as a surfer, a loving girlfriend, and a bright future ahead of him. Troy, the younger brother, is a troubled teenager struggling to find his place in the world. He is withdrawn and often gets into trouble, much to the dismay of his parents.
One fateful day, Chance and Troy are surfing together when a rogue wave hits them, knocking them both unconscious. When they wake up, Chance is paralyzed from the neck down. Troy, miraculously, is unharmed.
The accident has a profound impact on both brothers. Chance is forced to confront the reality of his new life, a life of paralysis and dependence. Troy, guilt-ridden over his brother's accident, becomes withdrawn and self-destructive. The once-close brothers are now separated by a chasm of pain and loss.
As the years pass, Chance and Troy struggle to come to terms with their new lives. Chance finds solace in painting, a talent he discovers after the accident. Troy, after years of self-destructive behavior, finds redemption through helping others.
In the end, Chance and Troy find a way to heal their wounds and rebuild their lives. They learn to live with their loss, to find hope in the darkest of times, and to appreciate the fragility of life.
